Power outages can occur for a variety of reasons. You need to prepare your business before it happens so that you don’t suffer from it. Here are some of the steps that you need to take beforehand in order to prepare for an unexpected power outage.

Create Emergency Plans:
You need to have an emergency plan in place so that your employees aren’t injured. This means that you need to develop evacuation routes that are lit or have emergency kits in strategic locations around the office. An emergency kit should have basic supplies, such as battery powered flashlights, a handheld radio, and a first aid kit. For more extended outages that are associated with emergency situations, you should consider stocking nonperishable food and water.
Install A Generator:
Having a generator will enable you to keep your business running for shorter outages. Consulting with a commercial electrician will give you the best course of action on the type and size of generator that will work for your business needs. There will also be the wiring to consider for the more essential items around your office space as well as emergency lighting that can be installed. In some climates, you may want to consider having your HVAC system connected to a generator system.
Invest In Surge Strips:
Power outages and other types of voltage surges can harm your electrical devices. You need to invest in surge strips so that you can keep your equipment running properly. Another bonus of using a surge strip is that each work station is only utilizing one of your electrical outlets. A surge strip is relatively inexpensive when you compare it to the cost of having to replace your equipment if it were to become damaged during an outage situation.
Have Backups:
If you want to continue operating your business during a short power outage situation, look into having backup plans in place. For example, there are wireless devices that will allow your computers to stay online in order for your employees to complete important tasks. Another good thing to have on hand are landline phones. This type of phone system doesn’t require the use of power in order to function. You could keep them stored in a closet until the need arose for you to put them in place.
These are some of the more basic ideas that you can implement in order to prepare for a power outage. The extent and frequencies of the outages in your area may require you to invest in additional steps to prepare your business.
